Childhood's dreaminess, fears and trauma - are all major topics of the short film "Don't Let the Bedbugs Bite". As I feel very passionate about the ideas and the characters behind the story, I was very excited to work on the project.
After discussing the look of the film, it was decided to turn it into a Christmas time story, as that would greatly contribute to the dispute of the family and the loneliness of the child during probably the main family oriented holiday of the year.
That also came as a main challenge, as the film was shot in April and was supposed to be fully transformed into jolly winter time. A big chunk of the budget was dedicated to Christmas decor and the creation of the wealthy, almost too perfect holiday atmosphere to contrast the underlying issues lying within the family.
A lot of the emphasis was made on the bright colourful lighting, that at first seems playful and childish, when we come to realise for it to be a an illusion, a dream of a child's mind as a way to escape the harsh reality.
Overall, the look of the look of the film could be described as inauthentic and almost superficial - all of that to show that often under the layer of seemingly ideal life often lie big issues that surely affect the children.
